- 25 May 10 - Launch of new Athletics Australia
‘Level 1 Beginning Coach’ Course
The first phase of the new Athletics Australia ‘Level 1 Beginning Coach’
course has been launched. A pilot course has also been run to test the approach (22 May 10, in
NSW). It will be only one day, instead of two days, and, before attending, all applicants must
have successfully completed a pre-requisite on-line course managed by the ASC. . . . . read more

Workshop for Coaches and Athletes - Knox Athletic
Centre
While the workshop sessions that run from 09:00 to 12:15 on the Saturday morning are designed
primarily for coaches and athletes who are serious about learning more about their event, they
should also appeal to parents, supporters, and others with an interest in broadening their
knowledge of a specific discipline, or in officating or helping at these events. The sessions
include: a continuation of the Hammer Throw
workshop [Bryan Neighbour and Pavlo Milinevskyy], Horizontal Jumps [John Boas], Sprint Relays [Steve Cowburn and Neville Down], and
Endurance Events [Richard Huggins and George

- 21 May 10 - A Preview of the June 5th Workshop
Sessions
This workshop should appeal to a very wide number of coaches and also to school PE and sports
team staff. VLAA centres and schools sports staff should make every effort to have their relay
coaches attend this session. . . . Next month's Hammer Workshop will include an on-field
demonstration of technique and teaching methods by Geelong coach Pavlo MILINEVSKYY (PB: 76m). .
. . Our own Mr Jumps, the honorable John Boas OA, will present a workshop on the long and
triple jump events. . . . Endurance event workshops will focus on Cross-Country.
June’s presenter will be internationally renowned Richard Huggins. . . . . read

Thank you everyone for your support of the May installment of our coaching Winter Workshop
Series. . . about 40 attended the three event-group sessions. . . . It was noted that for the
Hammer Throw Workshop we had almost as many athletes as coaches attend. . . . The Walks session
was presented by Shane Bertrand and included a presentation based on a video-recorded session
with Simon Baker. . . . The Sprints session presented by Steve Gaffney was an adapted
presentation from Steve’s 2010 presentation to ATFCA Level 4 candidates. . . . .

It is important to know who our Coaching Course clients are by constantly reviewing course
feedback and listening to participants. For Level 1 courses, AV Clubs and VLAA centres attend

Haileybury Australian Girls School Representatives Win Individual Gold and Team Silver
at
the 2010 ISF World Schools Cross Country Championships, Slovakia, 19-24 April
Stephen McMahon, ATFCA Level 4, Chair of Athletics & Head of Cross Country at Haileybury
College, reports on the Haileybury Hearts avoiding riots in Athens and overcoming volcano
cancelled flights, to claim 1 Gold and 1 Silver medal at the 2010 International School Sport
Federation (ISF) World Schools Cross Country Championships and contribute strongly to
Australia’s best ever performance in this event in its 35 year history (7 medals in

- 04 May 10 - Current ATFCA Courses compared with
new AA/ASC Courses
A number of members have been asking for a comparison of the ATFCA level 1 and 2 course content
against the new level 1 and 2 being developed by AA and the ASC and why the courses developed
over almost 4 decades have been replaced. The simple answer is that the Australian Sports
Commission requires each sport to manage its own coach education programs. Bryan Neighbour

- 03 May 10 - Launch of New Level 1 "Beginning
Coach" by AA and ASC
On the weekend, 1-2 May 10, four Victorian ATFCA Course presenters (Neville Down, Gayle
Anderson, Bernie Curtin and Bryan Neighbour) were among some 40 course presenters from across
Australia attending the launch and presenter and assessor workshop at the AIS. Michael Poulton
(AA) announced that the new level 1 one day course, prepared by Athletics Australia is still at
the draft stage but almost ready and will be submitted quite soon for national endorsement as
an accredited coaching qualification.

- 01 Apr 10 - ATFCA Vic Endorsed as AA Coach
Education Provider
Michael Poulton, National Coaching Manager, Athletics Australia, has advised that ATFCA
Victoria's application to be an Endorsed Coach Education Provider through Athletics Australia
in Victoria, has been approved.
The new "Beginning Coach" program will be launched nationally at a workshop to be held at the
AIS on 1-2 May, 2010. Athletics Australia will fund several ATFCA Victoria presenters/assessors
to attend this workshop.
The workshop will involve presentations and practical sessions to detail the content and
prepare the presenters and assessors to deliver the program.
