Are you a track and field coach interested in evaluating your performance as a
coach?
Deakin University is currently conducting a study investigating the evaluation and measurement
of coach performance titled "Measuring coaching performance using a 360 degree feedback
process."
The project is looking at developing a way to assess coaching performance, initially in the
sport of athletics, using a method of 360 degree evaluation similar to those used in business
management. 360 degree evaluations have been used successfully in business for more than two
decades as a means of evaluation designed to encourage continual development and high levels of
performance in employees. Traditionally, coaches' performance has been judged solely based upon
the outcomes they produce – that is, the athletes' results – despite the
acknowledgment of the many external factors that play a role in the outcome of sporting
competition. Therefore, the aim of this research is to develop a 360 degree evaluation
inventory that takes into account all the important areas that influence coaching performance.
This research builds upon the limited availability of methods to effectively evaluate coaching
performance processes, as well as outcomes and will provide valuable implications for the
education, development and welfare of coaches.
Initial input is being sought from athletics coaches, of differing accreditation levels,
backgrounds and levels of experience, to participate in a short (20-30 minute) one-to-one
interview, about how (/if) they believe they should be evaluated and what types of criteria
they should be evaluated on. This information will then be used to help develop the 360 degree
feedback form.
If you are interested in participating, or would like more information, please do not hesitate
to email Rebecca York or phone her on 9244 5033.
